Awards Overview


ARA AWARDS

ADMINISTRATOR IN READING AWARD is awarded to a building or district level administrator who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting reading.  Contact Kay Calvert.  Click here ifyou prefer the application in Word Deadline:  Must be postmarked by March 1.


 CELEBRATE LITERACY--  Local councils nominate three honorees--a community leader, an Educator and an organization--who have made significant contributions to literacy in Arkansas.  From these council nominees, three state awards are presented. Click her if you prefer the WordCelebrate Literacy Flyer Contact Farrah Wilcox Deadline: Must be postmarked by January. 15.


Honor Council-- ARA contributes $100 to each local council that earns IRA Honor Council status. A quick check list has been added here but more detailed information is available through IRA.


JO FLANIGAN SCHOLARSHIP-$750 Scholarships awarded to further higher education study in reading or related areas. Click here if you prefer Word.  Contact Paula Findley. Deadline:  Must be postmarked by March 1.


Local Council Honoree--One state conference registration with one Book and Author Luncheon ticket is awarded to one member selected by each local council.  In addition, from the local council award recipients, one will be randomly selected to receive $750 to be used to attend the national IRA conference.  Contact Paula Findley. Deadline: Must be postmarked by October 1.  


   LOCAL COUNCIL LITERACY GRANTS-One grant per council per year may be awarded from August 1 through February 1.    For a printable and mailable form, click here.  The guidelines are also listed in this document. An evaluation is required along with reciepts following  completion of the grant.  Failure to submit an evaluation will result in the council not being able to apply for future local council literacy grants.  Printable evaluation form. Proposals and/or questions should be addressed to Paula Findley.


LOCAL COUNCIL PRESIDENT'S DIAMOND AWARD --Presented to Local Council Presidents that meetcriteria and deadlines.  Contact Paula Findley.

MEMBERSHIP AWARD-Presented to the top three local councils with the greatest percentage of increase in ARA membership and the local council with the greatest percentage of increase in IRA memberships. Contact Billie Ann Dishongh, 501-525-4208 or BillieAnn@arareading.org 


 STUDIES AND RESEARCH- Up to $750 in grant monies is available forstudies and research.  Click here if you prefer the application in studies_and_research_grant_application.doc.    Contact: Janie Weber. Deadline:  Must be postmarked by February 1.

IRA Awards

The Exemplary Reading Program Award honors the school having an outstanding reading program.  Contact Pam East (501-329-6642 orpam@arareading.org). Deadline:  November 15.  For more information contact: International Reading Association.

The Eleanor M. Johnson Award recognizes an outstanding elementary teacher of reading/language arts.  $1000 from Weekly Reader.  Deadline: November 15.  For more information contact: International Reading Association.

The Arbuthnot Award honors an outstanding college or university teacher of children's and young adult literature.  Deadline: November 15. For more information contact: International Reading Association.

The Nila Banton Smith Award is $1000 to a classroom teacher or reading specialist who has made an outstanding contribution in helping students become more proficient readers of content instructional materials.  Deadline: November 15. For more information contact: International Reading Association.

The Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award honors an outstanding college or university teacher of reading methods or reading-related courses.  Deadline: November 15. For more information contact:International Reading Association.

The Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Award honors an outstanding K-6 teacher dedicated to improving through reflective writing about his/her teaching and learning process.  Deadline:  November 1.  For more information contact: International Reading Association. 

The Albert J. Harris is a monetary prize granted annually for an outstanding contribution to the diagnosis and /or remediation of reading or learning disabilities.  Deadline:  October 15.  For more information contact:International Reading Association.

 The Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award ($1000) competition is sponsored by Silver Burdett Ginn and Company.  Deadline October 1.  For more information contact: International Reading Association.
