Hello, Friends-
I'd like you to know that I began a blog as a means of expanding on my school visits - there never seems to be enough time for Q&A after a presentation.  Here's the link:

21st  National African American Read-In Chain

In the spirit of celebration of February as Black History Month, the International Reading Association has endorsed the Twenty-First National African American Read-In Chain, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. This endorsement asks the state and/or local councils of IRA to join the NCTE in serving as hosts to create a chain of readers on Sunday, February 7, 2010, or Monday, February 8, 2010. The chain involves reading works authored by African American writers at community sites on Sunday and in school buildings on Monday.

Materials are available on IRA's website that outline the project, including a press release, invitation, and report card. You can find them by clicking the appropriate link under Read-In Chains at www.reading.org/AccessFor/CouncilLeaders/CouncilProjects.aspx.
Coordinator's Corner

Remember to encourage students to read the books of the Arkansas Diamond Primary and Charlie May Simon lists.  January and February are good months to read aloud one of the books from the lists to your students.  Students will be voting in March and they must have read or listened to three or more books from the list to be eligible to vote.  More information about the Arkansas Children's Book Awards may be found on
ARA's website.

 Happy Reading in 2010!
