Greetings from ALA Chairperson Kacy Barden

Fellow Literacy Leaders,

Greetings from ALA!

After a stressful past year, the Board and Committee Chairs of ALA have regrouped and are working hard to plan the activities and programs for the 2021-2022 school year!

We are working on the ALA Literacy Conference to be held on July 23, 2021. Have you registered yet? The theme is “Change the World One Reader at a Time”. Isn’t that what we all hope to achieve as literacy leaders in our state? Books have the power to spark creativity, invoke empathy and allow us to travel and experience worlds we wouldn’t be able to otherwise...books change lives.

The keynotes for the conference, Ruben Perez of aha Processing and Pernille Ripp, will challenge us to educate the whole child while creating a culture of reading in the classroom. We will also host the Charlie May Simon and Arkansas Diamond Book Awards luncheon where the award-winning authors will virtually accept their awards. The afternoon session will have some amazing breakout presentations you will not want to miss! Please go to the ALA website and view the conference information. The deadline for early registration is July 1, and you will want to take advantage of that price break!

What a crazy, unprecedented school year we have just completed! You all have been in the heat of the battle and have led the charge with grace, dignity and courage. I have been so proud to watch our state lead the way in education this past year. You all deserve lots of recognition for the way you have kept our students in school, on task and learning during a very challenging year. I hope you all find some time to relax and recharge this summer after having such a stressful school year.

May we always remember the way educators and organizations partnered together to support each other through the various challenges we faced this past year and use those experiences as a springboard for next year. As we look ahead to the new school year, my hope is that we find a renewed sense of community that is more focused on the ministry we all share in educating our students and mentoring parents.  I am proud to be an Arkansas educator, and I am thankful for all of you!
